Cooperative Institute for Marine Ecosystems and Climate
Sponsored by NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OARS, the Cooperative Institute for Marine Ecosystems and Climate (CIMEC) is a consortium of seven California universities: SIO/UCSD, CSU LA, Humboldt State U, UC Davis, UCLA, UCSB and UCSC. CIMEC follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, the Joint Institute for Marine Observations (JIMO), which has fostered collaborative research between NOAA scientists and academic scientists and students since its inception in 1991.
Research conducted by CIMEC falls under four themes: A) Climate and Coastal Observations, Analysis, and Prediction, B) Climate Research and Impacts, C) Marine Ecosystems, and D) Ecosystem-Based Management. These themes are closely aligned with NOAA’s Mission Goals 1-3. Theme A includes ocean observations, climate prediction and modeling, coastal ocean assessment and forecasting, atmosphere and ocean/atmosphere exchange, and biogeochemical cycles. Theme B focuses on observations and models of climate to help predict and better understand climate variation and change and better inform decisions. Theme C directly addresses the ecosystem approach to management with research on marine species population dynamics, ecology, biodiversity, and biogeochemistry. Theme D includes research in support of fisheries management, using climate and ocean observation and modeling as well as ecological process studies.
With a synergistic philosophy and a growing, diversified base of collaborators, CIMEC encompasses a wide variety of pioneering research and outreach activities in an effort to strengthen and improve our understanding of global ocean, climate, biological and earth sciences.
